RENDEZVOUS 2012

The FORE Alumni Network  organized Rendezvous 2012 on November 27, where those alumni of FORE who had done exceptionally well were called upon to share their experiences and address the present batch at FORE.

The five alumni who graced the evening and made the panel of the esteemed alumni for the event were namely Mr. Harkawal Singh (Batch 2001), Mr. Sitesh Padhee (Batch 2003), Mr. Ishu Bhasin (Batch 2007), Ms. Prakriti Wadhwa (Batch 2008) and Ms. Radhika Gupta. (Batch 2010).

Ms. Prakriti Wadhwa, who is currently working as an Associate Project Director- Qualitative and Shopper consulting group at TNS was the first speaker of the evening. She started the evening on a high note by reminding everyone of how tough it is to survive that first year in an MBA College “with groups that are never the ones you want to work with but the same is going to happen in organizations and this is what will help you all later.”

Following her was Ms. Radhika Gupta, a Senior Associate in the Telecom, Media and Technology domain at Grail Research. She kept her speech light hearted and tried to relate to the audience while reminding all to keep hope regarding placements and to not be rigid in their choice, as her last words were “ you should either do what you love, or love what you do and I chose the latter.”

Next to grace the stage was Mr. Sitesh Padhee who is currently handling corporate relations for mortgages in Delhi NCR.  Mr. Padhee reminded the students of how “in the corporate world it is your team that is responsible for you success, and each and every team member is equally important for success.”

Next was Mr. Ishu Bhasin, Brand Manager for Hero MotoCorp, handling marketing campaigns of the CD series (CD Dawn, CD Deluxe etc.) as well as the Splendor Portfolio (Splendor Plus, Splendor PRO, Splendor NXG, Super Splendor etc.). He started it off by a simple statement that he was all about "marketing, marketing, marketing”. He also reminded the batch of how it is the CV that selects you, but the road ahead is based on your acumen and talent.

The last speaker of the evening was Mr. Har Kawal Singh, who is currently working as Senior Manager- Marketing in Oral care products at Dabur. He reminded the students of how beneficial the committees at FORE are for an individual’s overall development. He spoke about how “being a member of FCD myself helped me gain confidence, and improve upon my communication skills, especially when it comes to communicating with the corporate world”.

All the alumni answered questions from the students that range from as simple as about the correct CV to thought provoking ones like the lack of work experience and how it influenced an individual. It was a highly interactive and informative session with all the students enjoying the chance of having their doubts cleared and learning from the experience that the alumni shared.  As the evening came to an end there were more than a few fears relieved, a few doubts cleared and a better understanding of what life after FORE might entail.

'AASHAYEIN' - Spreading Hope..

Aashayein is an event organized by Team Antar (CSR committee of FSM), in association with Salaam Baalak Trust. 12 members of Team Antar, along with a 40+ volunteers from our college visited DMRC Shelter Home near Tis Hazari Metro station on 21st October 2012. In a daylong event, they interacted with the kids, organized competitions, dined together and had a memorable time.

“It didn’t take much time to wash off the paint from our faces after the face painting competition, but a happy tinge will always be there…,” one of the volunteers said after getting back from Salaam Baalak Trust.

Volunteers from FORE with the young kids after Face Painting Competition

How much does a smile cost? Just another smile. This idea is epitomized in a day, and this is the idea Aashayein is based upon- to make one day in a child’s life special. The students took a day out for the kids and every minute of it was made worthwhile as they witnessed the hidden talents and the creative streak the kids had. They not only did just good; they excelled in the all the competitions- painting, face painting, balloon competition, paper dance, interactive quiz, Tambola and of course, cricket. Face painting made the thought of putting on make-up before a Saturday night-out bland and dull. In Painting competition, the kids showed how to apply thoughts instead of colours and during the quiz, one could easily have spotted 2 or 3 Derek O’Briens among them. In a nutshell, the games everyone played were not competitive, they were spirited.

Kids share smiles with the volunteers

Afterwards, everyone had lunch together. Lunch was served by the Team members and the volunteers. The kids interacted with everyone, told them little anecdotes from their eventful lives, stories so frivolously told yet so deeply and beautiful. Then, a documentary was shown to the kids to make them understand the importance of education and its role in their future lives, how it will shape the days to come and how it will be the only power they can wield to show the world that it is not the luck but the will of a person which takes one ahead in the race.

GOING BACK THE MEMORY LANE – JUBILATE 2012

“Many a time’s memories rush forward unbidden, and yet if given a time to recollect the moments, The incidents are recounted in an effortless rhythm.”

The warm evening of October 13, 2012 saw FORE School of Management lit up with more than just flowers and lights; it was lit up with the sense of excitement and more importantly a sense of nostalgia as the present students of FORE geared up to meet the esteemed alumni.  With all the committees joining hands to prepare for the final day, it was essentially an effort of the FORE Alumni Network along with the Think Tank team and Team Nexus. The annual meet responsible for bringing together the past and the present of FORE, started in the evening amidst warm welcome by the students with ‘tikas’ and warm smiles all around.  Once the alumni and directors assembled in the Virajam Auditorium, the comparers of the day Amrit Sagar and Pallavi had the ball rolling.

The evening started with a warm recollection of what college life was all about with these words by Amrit “What memories over the years to us come by, with a never a thought of the old building’s lack! No one minded the cracked windowsills; or the stairs so worn, many took spills.” With these words he built up the nostalgic note for the evening, where everyone sat recollecting their past. With the traditional lighting of the ceremonial lamp, the proceedings were officially initiated. Thereafter, Dr. Anupam Narula, Professor in charge FORE School of Management addressed the audience with his welcome note, and the show finally began.

In his usual enigmatic style, Dr. J.K. Das, Director FORE School of Management, bid a warm welcome to his past students –the alumni to their Alma Mater.  His words were enough to bring alive the charm of the evening as everyone sat enraptured by his knowledge and the memorable moments that he helped remember. He was followed by Vice President Treasurer, Dr. B.B.L Madhukar who honored the dais with his evergreen words. His subtle charisma coupled with his unique ideas brought a new fire to the evening.  Thereafter Mr. R.C. Sharma, President, took up the dais to bid welcome to the gathered alumni.  He reminded one and all of how FORE had come such long way since its inception, proudly talking about the upcoming building at Sonipat as well as the ongoing construction in the present building. Following him was President Emeritus, Professor R.P. Billimoria who, in his usual fashion, kept his speech short and sweet but filled with an enigmatic essence.  Last, but not the least, to embrace the dais was the President of FORE Alumni Association, Mr. Sachin Jain.  His words not only pepped up the liveliness of the evening but also served as a reminder of all the wonderful ways in which FORE alumni can be in touch, be it through the FORE Face book page, or other efforts.

And as Mr. Sachin bid farewell to the dais, it was time for the awards. Back after a hiatus of four years the awards were Alumni Recognition Awards given for Executive Leadership, Entrepreneurship and for Public Contribution. This time the recipients of the awards were Mr. Rakesh Mathur, Mr. Sanjeev Bajaj and Ms. Anjum Chopra respectively.

As each recipient received his/ her award, they recounted moments spent at FORE and how it had shaped them to be the person they are today. The first up on the dais was Mr. Rakesh Mathur, the current director (sales) for Industrial Technologies, who not only has had an exemplary career of 17 years but has also managed a$22 million plus portfolio. He fondly remembered all of his teachers and talked about how he is still in touch with the faculty at FORE as they had a huge role to play in making him the person he is today. Up next was Mr. Sanjeev Bajaj, Managing Director of Bajaj Holdings & Investment Limited, since April 2012. A part of FMG 2, he very rightly proclaimed that FORE was as much a part of his life as he was of FORE and talked of how the learning that we receive at the college turn back to help us in endless moments in life. To end the awards was none other than Ms. Anjum Chopra, the recipient of Arjuna Award (for her achievement and contribution to women’s cricket in India.) With her subtle sense of humor and invigorating charm she added a new wave to the evening, reminding one and all of the multitude ways in which FORE served as a source of great fun and even greater memories. Her adventures served as an inspiration to the students, a reminder to the audience, and a delight to the teachers.

The night seemed never to end, such was the charm that spread and this charm was further carried on by the cultural event that the students had planned. Before the advent of the events, the crowd got together for a short game of FORE Tambola and the enthusiasm with which the alumni responded to the questions about their own FORE was overwhelming. Not a single memory was lost, not a single fact mistaken, and the alumni and faculty together enjoyed the game with the innocent competitiveness that drives us all.

No sooner had the game ended, that the cultural event started. The students of FORE had endeavored to give the alumni a brief flashback journey into their two years spent at FORE and thus using skit, power point presentations and a sensational band performance, the students managed to revive the feeling that being a Foreian is all about. Depicting the life of a kid who just got into FORE, the skit was a delightful attempt at showcasing the highlights of an MBA graduate- the scary examinations, the excessive case studies, the first crush, the placement victory. The band performance in the end acted as the cherry on the cake, leaving everyone mesmerized as the crowd hummed to tunes of songs old and new.

It was with a silent grace that the evening came to an end. However as  the alumni were guided to food and cocktail, the atmosphere was such that it was evident that though the evening might have ended, the feeling of being a part of FORE lives on forever, only to be relived once again year after year.

KREATE- Letting the thought flow

The Centre for Entrepreneurship Development at FORE School of Management is synonymous for being the supporter of everything that’s new and different. And this fact was further proved by the intra-college competition KREATE recently held in the college.  True to its motto, this event by CED acted as the perfect platform to enable the budding entrepreneurs at FORE to give voice to their ideas.  With Mr. Sahil Malhotra, the CEO of Crisp Software Solutions, our very own Dr. Anita Lal acting as the judges for the event , and the first year batch of FORE as offering rebuttals, the participants knew they had to deliver to please, and each and every one of the competing teams stood true to their mark.

KREATE was basically an idea generation competition and was divided into two rounds. A preliminary round had already been conducted wherein various teams submitted an executive summary of their business idea. Thereafter 5 teams were shortlisted for the final round held on October 11, 2012. The five shortlisted teams were Scrappers, Sanrakshan, Invincible, Astitva and Savvy. The teams were judged on three parameters which were content, presentation and the time taken to present. Each team was given 3 minutes for the presentation and a buzzer was be rung at exactly 2 minutes and 30 seconds to give the teams a chance to wrap up their presentation in the remaining time. Thereafter there was a round for questions and answer between the teams and audience and the judges.

From waste management schemes to ideas of movie cafes to online grocery shopping portals, the ideas were as wide as they were well rehearsed. Each and every time put in their effort to not only showcase the best presentation, but also highlight the intricate points of a business plan such as the revenue and expenditure details, the expected challenges etc.  The highlight of the event was perhaps the poise and confidence with which the teams handled any and every question flung their way. However there could only be one winner and they were Vinoth Kannan and Kumar Varun from team Scrappers, with Anshul Gupta, Aarushi Jain and Mansee Saxena from team Sanrakhshan coming to a close second. The first prize winners would have direct entry into the inter college b-plan competition held by CED in the form of Concoct.

In the end Mr. Malhotra graciously gave advice on how the remaining teams could one day turn their idea into a reality. Dr. Lal also went on to remind the teams of how it was always better to test their idea and improve upon the flaws so that the final result could emerge with least mistakes. Both the teams and the audience paid close attention to this parting advice. All in all it was an educational and entertaining event enjoyed by one and all.

Anubhuti Session with Mr. Maneesh Pherwani

“Making Effective Presentations” is a crucial part of the journey of any MBA. On October 9,2012,the students at FORE School Of Management were provided with some valuable tips about honing their Presentation skills by Mr Maneesh Pherwani, Regional Sales Manager at Johnson & Johnson Medical, who  visited FORE as part of the 'Anubhuti' session held by the CID division. An experienced Corporate Sales professional, Mr Pherwani stressed upon the importance of Communication in an Organisation and the role of one’s Body Language in making the whole  process all the more effective.

He continued with the guidelines of what works and what does not. He advised the Students against reading from the slides, using small text or long sentences and too many graphic or annoying sound effects in a presentation. He also gave the Audience some Rules of Thumb such as being prepared to answer questions about Why,What,Where,Whom,How through a presentation and the very important  “Rule of 6” i.e. using 6 words per line and 6 lines per slide.

He took the Session forward with some tips to design the presentations better. He talked about improving the readability of a slide by using Sans-Serif fonts and expressing the information through concise bullet points. He also shared his own experiences and insights about maintaining a consistent style through the presentation. After the design,he shifted his focus towards as he put it “the Final Frontier” of delivering the presentation. He expertly talked about the importance of knowing one’s audience citing relevant examples. The Session indeed proved to be an hour of immense learning for all the budding Managers present in the Auditorium.

Investing with Mr. Sachin Pandey

‘If you have knowledge, let others light their candles in it’ and inspired by this , Mr. SACHIN JAIN - HEAD INVESTMENT ADVISORY - NORTH at Standard Chartered Bank visited the college on September23, 2012 for the Anubhuti session organized by the Corporate Interaction Division. Being a FORE alumni, he could connect with students even more and was personally interested in helping the students.

His opening statement on Indian Economy as an exciting economy gathered the attention of all students. The interactive flow of session with discussions on euro financial crisis , importance of GDP, real and nominal GDP and trends in GDP in the country kept the students involved .The insights about Budget and its decisions and Fiscal Deficit and its impact on our daily lives was very well put up with help of volunteers.

The session became even more informative when he shared his knowledge on current status of the country which indirectly inspired students to stay updated. His main message to the students was their reason for persuing MBA course isn’t fulfilled if they are not passionate about it and quoting this fact he said work pressure increases with growth so students should consider their present lifestyle as a preparation for corporate life. He concluded with sharing importance of alumni giving examples globally like Mark Zuckerberg. Overall session was truly informative and motivating for everybody.

CED Workshop with Dr. Anita Lal

“There’s always a scope to learn, to grow, to improve, … provided one be willing to explore it.”

The workshop conducted by the Centre for Entrepreneurship Development for the first year students on August 29, 2012 was perhaps one of the best testaments to the aforementioned point. With our very own Dr. Anita Lal as the Chief Speaker, the students looked up to the event with high expectations and it feels great to know that ma’am delivered above and beyond.  From the very beginning, the style she adopted was so engaging that every student sat enraptured. She started with a question, and ended with a thought, and without a doubt students left with the feeling of “what if”.

In the very beginning she called for student participation by asking for their input as to what CED as a team could do to help them be better entrepreneurs, and when answers like ‘roll over placements’ and ‘incubation cells’ came up, her enthusiastic response was perhaps the only boost the students needed. From there on, it was more of a stimulated discussion than a lecture on entrepreneurship and almost everyone got a chance to express their thoughts and ideas.  She started the session with a very basic introduction of how entrepreneurship as a term really came about, and enlightened one and all by talking about how it was Richard Cantelin, a French Economist who coined the word in the eighteenth century (1756). She was like a storehouse of fascinating information and from informing the audience of how the definition for entrepreneurship travelled from Mercantilists, to Physiocratic and moved on till it reached the Structural definition, to describing the Schumpeter’s Entrepreneurship Model, her knowledge stumped all. A very simple and yet immensely important point that she stressed upon was how any idea has to be accepted by the society for it to turn into a successful entrepreneurial venture. It was here that she gave example of how the steam engine was modified to serve the society better.

She not only educated but also served as an excellent motivator. The student were given a reality check when she gave examples upon examples of how individuals like Thomas Edison, Walt Disney, Shahnaz Hussain, Kiran Mazumdar Shah, etc. worked in a much more tough environment than the one we live in today and still managed to be exceptional entrepreneurs. She made the audience realize of how funding, age, literacy or even work experience could not be a barrier if an individual truly wanted to succeed.

In addition to this one of the highlights of the session was firstly how she made the audience go through an assessment exercise and from there on the audience was divided into groups who came up with business ventures for Sachin Tendulkar. The audience was so delighted by the activity that an overwhelming response was seen, and a group came up with as many as 23 new ventures that Mr. Tendulkar could enter into. And yet there were more options and more answers and from a saloon shop to a cricket commentator the students left no alternative. She thus talked about how every individual entrepreneur is different from another and while there are nearly 47 business traits, it is in fact possible to cultivate one and all provided you give yourself a chance to do so.

She thus ended the session on a high note, reminding the audience to always have their actions reflect their choices be they professional or personal. Thus, the audience left the auditorium with provoking thoughts, and as they had resounded together in the hall, a desire that someday they might just be the next entrepreneur like Suhas Gopinathe (the youngest entrepreneur that the audience discussed about through a case study). It was an invigorating session and each and every student felt lucky to have been able to take in so much from so short a time. The CED put up a commendable show and every student now look forwards to more such sessions.

Anubhuti Session with Mr. Rakesh Kumar

True genius of a person is not in the reflection of his knowledge but in how can one enable others to relate to that knowledge.  This fact was further proved by Mr. Rakesh Kumar who visited the college on August 14, 2012 for the Anubhuti session organized by the Corporate Interaction Division. Holding the position of Chairman, Global Qualitative Board & Head of Africa - Middle East - Asia Pacific, Firefly Millward Brown, it was his humility and simplicity that immediately struck a chord with the students.

He very expertly talked about two of the major forces to affect the business world today, that are ‘the rules for brand engagement in the social media space’ and ‘the mirror has two faces – dissecting human personalities in the social media space.’ While the former stressed on how today the world of marketing needed to focus on social media and utilize it for promoting products, the latter talked about the difference in the online and offline personality of individuals. Right from the start it was an interactive and engaging session filled with simple truths and facts that in equal amounts impressed and enlightened the students.

First and foremost the topic was such that the students immediately warmed to it. However, it was Mr. Kumar’s proficient handling of the simple and at times basic queries of the students that truly made the session informative. In addition to this he kindly shared a lot of information based on researched carried by his company, as well as talked about the future that the field of marketing will have to move into. He cited relevant examples, like higher propensity among single children (especially in China etc.) to develop a close relationship to their virtual life. He also mentioned the Egyptian Revolution to stress upon the power of social media. Thus his examples, the straightforward approach and the stimulating presentation kept the session invigorating and inspiring. It was a truly knowledgeable experience for one and all.

N. R. Narayam Murthy, Chairman Emeritus, Infosys Ltd., is the man behind one of the world’s most successful IT companies.

He urged the students to align personal objectives with the growth impulses of the country and to take up the responsibility of contributing to the society.

He quoted American Social writer, Eric Hoffer, "In a time of drastic change it is the learners who inherit the future," and emphasised that, "every citizen has an important role in the undertaking of the nation's development; however, the educated ones have a greater opportunity and consequently a greater responsibility towards this contribution".

He said, “We still have more than 350 million Indians living with a mere Rs.36.00 per day; 250 million Indians do not have access to save drinking water. Over 750 million Indians do not have access to decent sanitation. India ranks 6th or 7th in the global hunger index. It is therefore appropriate to think of few important things. Have India made significant progress since independence. Can we be happy about the progress?”

ANUBHUTI SESSION with Mr. Kamal Singh(24/07/2012)

It is not often that we come across people who not only impress us but also inspire us. It is then no wonder that, it was with awe that students at FORE School of Management welcomed Mr. Kamal Singh, the Director at the Centre for Management Development & New Initiative MAST-AIMA.

Visiting FORE as a part of the “anubhuti” session conducted by the Corporate Interaction Division of the institute on July 24, 2012 ; Mr. Singh is the recipient of several accolades and awards,  and was recently awarded the ‘Indian Achiever’s Award’ by Indian Achievers Forum.  Responsible for having launched various events, including the recently launched initiative Management Aptitude Test Skill Test (MAST), it was no wonder that the session that he conducted was not only educational but also highly interactive.

Giving it a simple and straightforward start, Mr. Singh involved the audience right from the begining. Constantly encouraging and supporting the enthusiastic students, who were all vying to answer, he managed to give attention to one and all. Starting with a simple question wherein he asked the students to cite the emerging changes in global business world, he effectively incorporated the answers of the students to highlight the changes happening in the business world.

Citing relevant reasons such as demographic dividends, innovation and liberalization, increases in expectancy level etc., he chose relevant examples to help the students relate better. Perhaps the greatest learning that he imparted was how every individual could be an effective future manager not only at the national level but also at the global level. Stressing upon the importance of qualities like creativity, passion, efficiency, flexibility etc., he chose specific examples like that of Indra Nooyi, IPL, and Bharti-Airtel etc, which motivated the audience. In addition to this, a very pertinent question at this time, the importance of ethics was also stressed upon by him. His delight when nearly ninety percent of the audience regarded ethics as an important tool was obvious.  It was thus, not advice but experience that students took away from the session.

The true highlight of the event was however the expert manner in which Mr. Singh handled students’ queries and doubts. He ended the evening on a high note, leaving students to ponder over how they could be visionaries in the coming future. It is perhaps then an understatement to say that every student felt privileged to have attended the session.

TIGER 8 FINALS

Action Strip : Vijay BHerwani and Hemant Jain in action
Seesaw is the best word to describe today’s epic final between Foreplay-ers (Sec A) and Benchwarmers (Sec C) of the Tiger 8 cricket tournament organised by FSD in Sanjay Van. The tournament saw 8 teams participate, two from each section. Benchwarmers had defeated Foreplay-ers in the group stages of the tournament and the finals was the perfect stage for a revenge match. Supporters of both the teams were large in number and wildly enthusiastic, cheering their team through the ups and downs.

Foreplay-ers led by Amrit Sagar won the toss and elected to bat and in walked Kapil Goel and Hemant  Jain. They provided a solid beginning with Kapil hitting a towering six. Kapil was then caught brilliantly near the boundary by Vijay Bherwani. The next few overs Foreplayers consolidated their innings and left the fireworks for the last two overs.  Deepak Rana and Hemant Jain who went on to score a half century hit some brilliant shots for 4’s and 6’s. In the end Foreplay-ers reached a formidable total of 95. After the break it was the time for Benchwarmers to do the batting, headlined by Vijay Bherwani who was yet to be dismissed in the tournament. Their start was solid, by timely wickets were taken by Foreplayers. Vijay who continued his strong run was finally dismissed by Anurag Dhir. Foreplay-ers seemed to be cruising to the finals. The last 2 overs required 36 runs and Amrit balled brilliantly the penultimate over to leak only 8 runs.

The last over which was to be of 8 balls required 28 runs .Foreplay-ers were smelling victory now but Sandeep  Singh the captain of Benchwarmers had other plans as he hit few towering sixes. The momentum was shifting but Foreplay-ers hit back with back to back wickets. Extras and tardy fielding cost Foreplay-ers dear in the next couple of balls. It all came down to the last ball, which required 4 runs and Surya Dahiya rose to the occasion by hitting a 6 and winning the tournament for Benchwarmers. The crowd rushed to greet the players.

Foreplay-ers were gracious in defeat and hugs and handshakes were flowing freely. The crowd cheered wildly as the wiining trophy was awarded to Benchwarmers.
MOTM – Sandeep Singh
MOTS- Vijay Bherwani

The entire tournament was conducted brilliantly by FSD led by Nitin Gandhi and it is now wonder why FSD events see such mass participation and enthusiastic support from Foreians.

A Goodbye! Farewell To The Batch 2010-2012

Man's feelings are always purest and most glowing in the hour of meeting and of farewell. ~ Jean Paul Richter

A Meet With Ashish Kapur: The YO! Enterpreneur!

If we talk about young Indian entrepreneurs, the subject remains incomplete without mentioning Ashish Kapur, the co-founder of Yo! China! The Indian chain of Chinese cuisine all over the country. To kick off its last exciting event for the academic year 2011-2012, Centre for Entrepreneurship and Development, FORE School of Management invited Ashish Kapur to talk to students about his journey of becoming a successful entrepreneur.
Ashish Kapur is an Electronics & Telecom Engineering graduate from McGill University, Canada. He is a recipient of the Scarlet Key Leadership Award and a graduate of GE Financial Management Program. He Worked with GE Capital across North America in Financial & Quality Management and is a Six Sigma Quality Black Belt. He conceived the concept of Quality Chinese Food at Value Pricing and founded Yo! China. Under his leadership, Yo! China has grown to be the larget restaurant chain over a five year period.
Ashish walked us through his story, almost telling the tale with as much vigour and taste as do the variety of foods in his restaurant. As captivating was his style of delivering his story, it was as gripping to know his eventful journey , the lows and highs of his business and how he got through all the challenges, winning against all the odds.
Among many strategic lessons that we learned from him, the most important was that of perseverance. Ashish Kapur, in his quest to become an entrepreneur in India, with no previous experience or family background in business, went through about 80 rejections before finding the funding from his first angel investors. A man of his intellect , personality and options at hand to switch to a safer better career could have easily took the other road in due course , but it was his perseverance , passion and trust in himself that led him to keep going until he succeeded. FORE School of Management is thankful to Mr. Ashish Kapur for sharing his experience with the students and infusing all the requisite enthusiasm that one needs time and again to believe in one’s idea through his journey of becoming an entrepreneur.
